‘Midnight Feasts and horrid sneaks make for a ripping Blyton Yarn’

PICK OF THE WEEK - THE SUNDAY TIMES - Victoria Segal

What a gift this is: released on the iPlayer when schools closed, this adaptation of Enid Blyton’s boarding-school stories debuts on CBBC in a tumble of lacrosse nets and pillow feathers. Absolutely true to the spirit of the originals, the series follows 12-year-old Darrell Rivers (Ella Bright, pictured) as she starts her first term at the girls’ school, meeting the madcap Alicia Johns (Zoey Siewert), mousy Mary-Lou (Imogen Lamb), absent-minded Irene (Natasha Raphael) and imperious Gwendoline (Dänya Griver) on the way. Some are bricks and some are beasts; there are mysteries and a strong moral code, as well as plenty of pranks. With This Country’s Ashley McGuire playing the irascible Matron and Jennifer Wigmore as the stately headmistress Miss Grayling, it’s a world away from online learning platforms — escapist, nostalgic and as glorious a treat as a midnight feast.

BEYOND THE JOKE

Was worried this was going to be soppy, sentimental and full of growing old disgracefully cliches. And while there is certainly plenty of that, there is much more edge and depth to it than expected. Never mind seizing the day, just seize the TV remote and tune in on Thursdays at 10pm.

GAP YEAR

THE GUARDIAN

Gap Year is very silly and very puerile, and I mean both in a good way. A Plebs way.

RADIO TIMES

Angst, laughs and fun in the sun with E4's Gap Year

SUNNY D

THE GUARDIAN

Sunny D – Dane Baptiste's sitcom is dizzyingly hilarious

BEYOND THE JOKE

What is important is that there are laughs, which there are. Hopefully the BBC will make more.

SO AWKWARD

BROADCAST AWARD WINNER 2016

This was delivered with a lightness of touch and a slick filming style, including some imaginative and heightened pre-title sequences that impressed the judges. “It’s really funny, smart and witty, with a real spark to it,”

JAMILLAH & ALADDIN

THE INDEPENDENT

Of course, it’s just a TV programme and we shouldn’t over-blow its importance,

But, if we continue with positive, diverse programming, then it can play a role in shaping the next generation’s belief systems, values and morals.

HANK ZIPZER - THE WORLD'S GREATEST UNDERACHIEVER

Here are some great reviews for the first series. It originally aired Jan 2014, and has since gone on to create three further acclaimed series, and a final Christmas Special for CBBC.

As mentioned previously the final episode directed by Bex, 'First Date Dilemma' written by Joe Williams was nominated for Best Fiction at the Royal Television Society Awards, 2015.
